Having served in the military for over 22 years, I have had the opportunity to live in dozens of various communities in both the United States and abroad. As a combat Infantryman, I have always included strength training in my fitness routine as part of the job and have, therefore, been required to seek out gym facilities in the areas where I have been stationed. As a Veteran, I have a great appreciation for this country and its citizens and I try to make it point, whenever possible, to join and support locally owned gyms and businesses over the bigger franchises. This has allowed me to better integrate into the small communities that I have been stationed near, and to support local business owners in their endeavors. Unfortunately, Press Fitness has demonstrated that my small business approach is not always a sound one. After 3 months of membership at Press Fitness, where both my wife and I attended, one of the self-proclaimed co-owners of this business, Jason Davis, stalked my wife on social media and then sent her “friend requests” even though he was aware of the fact that she is married and he and I were not acquainted whatsoever. His profile picture can best be described as a half-nude image of him standing inside of Press Fitness and is hardly an appropriate picture for any self-respecting, middle-aged man, or local business owner. His actions on social media were highly offensive and in our current world where lives and relationships are destroyed by such aggressive behavior on social media, I took the opportunity to confront Mr. Davis and explain to him that his actions were inappropriate and that it would be in his best interest to discontinue any attempt to gain contact with my spouse on face book. Within 48 hours of confronting Mr. Davis, co-owner of Press Fitness, he informed me that after discussing “it” with his co-owner, Bobby Betts, I was not allowed to come back to their gym. This incident has forced me to reconsider my philosophy regarding the support of small, locally-owned businesses, as any disrespectful or inappropriate behaviors on the part of the owner(s) will not be resolved, but rather, the personal biases and cronyism associated with those who operate such establishments will trump good, ethical business practices. If you are looking for a gym to patron, avoid Press Fitness like the plague. Your wives will be harassed on social media, and your membership will be revoked if you complain about it!
